2020 Run of the Months
January 2020 
 
The Run of the Month for January was the Ben Rawlings trained Zipping Galon for his fantastic performance at Angle Park over the 731m on Thursday, 9th January.

A recent addition to the Rawlings kennel, he created a huge impression when he led most of the trip running splits of 16.31 and 29.52 with an amazing overall time of 42.70, this was only .2 outside the track record. His time recorded was as fast as any stayer had gone in the last 10 years.

 

 


 

February 2020

Coorong Lucy also claimed the Run of the Month for February for Cameron Butcher for her exceptional win at Angle Park over the 515m on Thursday, 20th February in the SA St Leger Final.
 
She began very well to be up vying for the early lead before being checked losing a number of lengths. She balanced up and gave chase, charging home to score by 1.25 lengths going away from her rivals.  Coorong Lucy’s overall time was a slick 29.87 with splits of 4.49 and 17.32 with a run home in a blistering 12.55.

 

 


 

 

March 2020

The Run of the Month for March was the Wally Harkins trained Sir Truculent for his brilliant win at Angle Park over the 731m on Thursday, 19th March in a Free For All event.

Blessed with loads of ability he put it all together on this night when he began well in the small field to land second early. He raced to the front mid race and then it was just a matter of how far the son of Worm Burner and Establish would win by. He careered away from his rivals to win by over 12 lengths running a sensational 42.76 for the staying trip.

 

 


 


April 2020

The Run of the Month for April was the Bill Wudarczyk trained Alfieri, for his sizzling win at Angle Park in a Heat of the SA Anniversary Cup over the 515m on Thursday, 16th April. 

Starting the even money favourite he exploded out of box 7 to challenge for the early lead in a slick 4.45. Into the back and the son of Fernando Bale and Rhonda Rocks raced away from his rivals recording a flying 16.77 second split. He was in no danger down the home straight going on to win by almost 7 lengths in a breath taking 29.39.

 

 


 

 

May 2020

The Run of the Month for May was the Wally Harkins trained Sir Truculent, for his super win at Angle Park in a Free For All over the 731m on Thursday, 14th May. 

Sir Truculent has been dominating the staying ranks recently, however, on this night he was even more dominating than normal. He began midfield, raced up to the lead early in the event and then from there it was all about times and margins. He ran a flying 42.74 in winning by almost 11 lengths confirming he is currently the best stayer in the State.

 


 

 

June 2020

The Run of the Month for June was again the Wally Harkins trained Sir Truculent for his brilliant win at Angle Park in the Shane McQueen Final on Thursday, 4th June. 
 
Sir Truculent, back in trip and in a super strong Final looked like his winning chances were gone at the winning post on the first occasion when he was back 7th and struggling to make ground. Down the back straight he was getting warm and had many lengths to make up, however, turning for home his big motor kicked in and he raced to the lead for a stirring win. He went on to win by 1.75 lengths but his time of 34.93 was amazing, to do what he did and still break 35.00 seconds for the 600m showed what a brilliant performance it was.

 

 


 

 
July 2020

The Run of the Month for July was again won by the Wally Harkins trained Sir Truculent for his sizzling win at Angle Park in a Free For All event on Thursday, 2nd July over the 731m.

Having already won the Run of the Month award for the two previous months, SA’s staying star may have even out done those performances on this night. As a red hot favourite he again powered past his rivals mid race to go on and win in fine style by 6.50 lengths in an amazing 42.66. This time was only .16 outside of the track record held by Arvos’ Athena set in 2004.

 

 


 

 
August 2020

The Run of the Month for August was also Shadow Mist for trainer Lauren Harris for his performance in a Heat of the National Championships at Angle Park on Thursday, 6th August. 

He exploded from the boxes to lead early and whilst there was some interference on the first turn it had no impact on his performance. He ran splits of 4.39, 16.62 with an overall of 29.33, one of the quickest times recorded in recent times. He won by 9.50 lengths and dominated his rivals.

 


 


September 2020

The Run of the Month for September was again Shadow Mist for trainer Lauren Harris, making it back to back awards for his performance in an Open event at Angle Park on Thursday, 17th September.

He fired out of the boxes at despatch running a blistering 4.40 and then 16.68 to the back with all eyes turning to the semaphore board. He went on to win by over 5 lengths in an amazing 29.29 which is the fastest time recorded at Angle Park this year. He now looks set for a real crack at the Million Dollar Chase series at Wentworth Park.

 

 


 

 

October 2020

The Run of the Month for October was also Golden Night for trainer Troy Murray with his brilliant win in the Group 1 Adelaide Cup at Angle Park on Friday, 9th October. 

As the start was affected he stayed close on the heels of race favourite Catch The Thief from box 2. Down the back straight Golden Night moved to third as he chased hard and then quickly moved to second off the back straight to chase out after Catch The Thief. The two gun chasers settling down to fight out the Adelaide Cup as they turned for home and it was Golden Night who poked his nose in front right on the line to take the Group 1 feature in a flying 29.55. By winning the Group 1 he also booked his spot in the Group 1 Topgun at the Meadows in November.

 

 


 

 

November 2020

The Run of the Month for November was Air Marshall for trainer Ray Murray after his track record performance at Angle Park on Monday, 16th November over the 388m journey. 
 
Blessed with high speed, Air Marshall wasn’t first away but he quickly exploded away from his rivals to lead easily over the short course trip. He ran through the first section in 9.84 and a quick time was on the cards. He raced away over the latter stages to win by almost 3 lengths in a flying 21.81, shaving .04 off Victa Louise’s time of 21.85 set in April 2018. With the redevelopment of Angle Park early next year it is likely this will be the last track record set at Angle Park before new distances are implemented.

 

 


 

December 2020

The Run of the Month for December was Jack’s Well for trainer Cameron Butcher after his powerful performance at Angle Park on Thursday, 17th December in Grade 3/4 company over the 515m journey.

In a tight month of voting he edged out Shima Breeze’s track record over the re- introduced 277m at Mt Gambier and Rushes slick performance at Angle Park with the judges leaning Jack’s Well’s way. The son of Aston Dee Bee and Molly Be Nimble began fairly from box 2 to land midfield early however he really got motoring in the middles stages to race to the front in the latter part, going on for a strong win by 6.50 lengths in a slick 29.64. His run home time was amazing considering where he was in the early running with a sizzling 12.52 on the way home showing his abundance of potential.
