2018 Greyhounds of the Month

January 2018

Greyhound of the month for January was the Tony Rasmussen trained Hukanui who raced three times in January for 3 wins, highlighted by his super performance in the SA Sprint Championship when he defeated a crack field of sprinters.

Locally bred, the son of Kelso’s Fusileer and Daddy’s Muffin started the month of with a blistering win at headquarters in a slick 29.66. He then stepped out in the SA Sprint Heats and blew his rivals away with a sizzling 29.52 win. With the SA Sprint Final delayed a week due to hot weather Hukanui was well prepared and led all of the way for a stirring win by 1½ lengths in a flying 29.65. 
At the end of the month Hukanui’s record stands at 71 starts with 22 wins and 30 placings with earnings just under $85,000.


 

 

February 2018

Greyhound of the month for February was the Robyn Mackellar trained Victa Louise who was undefeated in February winning all three of her starts including the prestigious St Leger Final.

Locally bred, the daughter of Fabregas and Victa Brooke started the month off with a sizzling 29.93 win in the semi-finals of the St Leger. She was then a warm favourite in the Final, even after drawing wide on the track, but she showed brilliant early speed to lead throughout for a great win. She ran a flying 29.80 before heading off to Gawler and winning in impressive fashion over the 531m in 31.02. 
At the end of the month Victa Louise’s record stood at 13 starts with 10 wins and 1 placing and earnings just over $17,000.

 


 


March 2018

Greyhound of the month for March was the Tony Rasmussen trained Honcho Monelli who stamped himself as the best sprinter in the State with 4 wins from 5 starts.

The son of Mogambo and Jackie Bale started the month of with a 5th in a heat of the Horsham Cup before heading back to SA. He then went undefeated at headquarters running sensational times. He won a Grade 5 in 29.60 by 11 lengths, with a run home of 12.43 which only a handful of greyhounds have achieved over the last 20 years. He then won his next three in open company running 29.42, 29.71 and 29.49 with an average winning margin of almost 5 lengths.
At the end of the month Honcho Monelli’s record stood at 77 starts with 19 wins and 33 placings and earnings just over $103,000.

 


 

 

 
April 2018

 

The Petar Jovanovic trained Cairnlea Jet went from Grade 6 company, to winning the Anniversary Cup final against the best sprinters in the State, in the space of only one month to be named the Greyhound of the Month for April.
The son of Bekim Bale and Cairnlea Ellie was undefeated in April winning all four of his starts. He started the month off by winning a Grade 6 heat at headquarters before sizzling around the Angle Park loam in 29.70 when he won the final. He made the big step up to Open grade when he contested a heat of the SA Anniversary Cup. He won the heat in a slick 29.66 defeating reigning Greyhound of the Year On Fire in the process and went into the final as one of many winning chances. He was sensational in the final running a brilliant 29.45 in defeating one of the best fields seen in recent times at the venue. 
At the end of the month Cairnlea Jet’s record stood at 15 starts with 8 wins and 4 placings and earnings around $25,000. Only turning 2 years of age in March he looks to have a very bright future.


 


May 2018 

The Tony Rasmussen trained Honcho Monelli has made it two awards in the last three months when he was named the Greyhound of the Month for May, after having a terrific month of racing where he won 2 races from 4 starts and 1 placing, highlighted by his Match Race series win at Sandown on Speedstar night.

The son of Mogambo and Jackie Bale kicked of his month with a trial performance at Sandown in a hope to qualify for the Group 3 Speedstar. Whist running blistering time he could only manage 1st reserve for the series and was drawn into the first consolation of the Speedstar on the night. In that series he won his Match Race in a flying 29.61 and had to wait and see if any other greyhound could surpass his time, they couldn’t and he was declared the winner. He then competed in the heats of the Group 1 Harrison Dawson at Sandown and after little luck finished a handy 6th.  He came back to SA and continued his flying form in winning against open company in a sizzling 29.65 before finishing the month off with an unlucky second at headquarters where he flashed home late.
At the end of the month Honcho Monelli’s record stood at 87 starts with 23 wins and 36 placings and earnings around $124,000 and continues to be the greyhound to beat when he steps out in local company. 

 


 


June 2018

In a tight month of voting Jeebus Bird for trainer Tony Rasmussen was given the nod by the Judges for his excellent month of racing in June with his highlight being the Shane McQueen Final early in the month. 

He was named greyhound of the month for June just ahead of Windmill Haze for Ken Gill and Springvale Choix for Barry Stewart who both had an excellent month of racing.
The son of Barcia Bale and Queen Bluebird started the month of with a super win in the Shane McQueen Final, the main 600m event of the season. He luckily gained a run from reserve and made full use of his opportunity defeating a hot line up in a solid 35.12. Jeebus Bird then won a Free For All Event over the 731m before stepping out in a heat of the Stayer’s Cup. He ran 4th and qualified for the final but was scratched prior due 
to injury.
At the end of the month Jeebus Bird’s record stood at 48 starts with 10 wins and 18 placings and earnings around $65,000. 

 

 

 


 


July 2018

In another tight month of voting Victa Caleb for trainer Mike Giniotis claimed the July monthly award for his outstanding form throughout the month highlighted by his super win in the 2018 Champion Puppy Final. 

He just edged out both Panhandle Slim for Ray Murray and Spring Bridge for Greg Board who also performed exceptionally in July.
Victa Caleb started the month off with a third in the Semi Final of the Gawler Produce before finishing a handy third in the rich Final. The son of El Grand Senor and Victa Victoria then stepped out in the prestigious Champion Puppy series winning his Heat in fine style. Showing his customary brilliant early speed he was able to lead a hot Champion Puppy Final winning in brilliant fashion. He rounded the month off with his 3rd win of the month with a sizzling 29.91 win at headquarters in winning by over 5 lengths.

At the end of the month Victa Caleb’s record stood at 15 starts with 8 wins and 7 placings and earnings just over $20,000. 

 


 


August 2018

In another terrific month of racing voting was close for the Greyhound of the Month award for August, however, it was the Petar Jovanovic trained Cairnlea Kenny who was judged best for the month highlighted by his brilliant third in the Group 1 National Championships at Sandown in late August.

Cairnlea Kenny started the month off with a solid second in a heat of the State National Sprint series and went into the local final as one of the favourites. He exploded out of the boxes to lead all the way and defeated a high quality line up in a slick 29.73 booking his spot at Sandown in the Group 1. Representing SA Cairnlea Kenny ran a bold race in behind the eventual winner West On Augie in running third with many judges believing a check early in the race could have cost him the top prize. 

At the end of the month Cairnlea Kenny’s record stood at 50 starts with 18 wins and 19 placings and earnings just over $77,000. 


 


September 2018

Greyhound of the Month award for September went to the Tony Rasmussen trained Nations who won 3 races out of his 4 starts for the month, highlighted by his State of Origin Match Race series victory. 

Nations started the month of with a strong win at The Meadows on a Saturday night over the 600m in a Mixed 4/5 event before returning to SA in an Open event where he came from the clouds to score an amazing win. He then went to Horsham in a Heat of the rich President’s Cup where he finished down the track, however, he returned to Angle Park in the Match Race series winning the much sought after title and showing his class. 

At the end of the month Nations record stood at 37 starts with 22 wins and 8 placings and earnings just over $60,000. 


 


October 2018

 

Greyhound of the Month award for October went to the Tony Rasmussen trained Honcho Monelli who took out his third monthly award for the year and now looks the favourite for Greyhound of the Year honours. 

Honcho Monelli started the month of in brilliant fashion winning a heat of the Group 1 Adelaide Cup in a slick 29.74 before starting one of the favourites in the final. He missed the kick in the Group 1 final but flashed home out wide to run a slashing third in the high quality feature. Towards the end of the month Honcho Monelli ventured to Gawler for the Group 3 Gawler Gold Cup heats where he was sensational in running 30.63 for the 531m journey in winning by 6 lengths and would start as one of the shortest priced favourites for the final in recent history.

At the end of the month Honcho Monelli’s record stood at 102 starts with 30 wins and 43 placings and earnings around $168,000. 

 



 


November 2018

Greyhound of the Month award for November went to the Tony Rasmussen trained Honcho Monelli who took out his fourth monthly award for the year and is now considered the red hot favourite for Greyhound of the Year honours. 

Honcho Monelli’s month was highlighted by his outstanding performance in the Group 3 Gawler Gold Cup in early November. After being brilliant in his heat and drawing box 1 in the final he started very short in the market and his supporters were not disappointed. He led a high quality field a merry dance winning in sensational fashion and claiming the Northern venue’s premier race. He then ran second at headquarters in FFA company before jumping across the border to Sandown for another placing towards the end of the month.

At the end of the month Honcho Monelli’s record stood at 105 starts with 31 wins and 45 placings and earnings around $195,000. 

 

 




December 2018

Greyhound of the Month award for December went to the Tony Rasmussen trained Shima Breeze who won 3 races from her 4 starts during December with one placing and performed brilliantly on the big stage Interstate. 

Shima Breeze started the month of at Sandown in a heat of the Group 2 Laurels where she won in fine fashion in 29.32 and qualified as the fastest qualifier for the semi-finals. She then won her semi-final leading throughout and running a sizzling 29.48. In a red hot final field she did SA and her connections proud running a bold race after being average away and finishing a top class third in the Group 2 final. She returned home and blistered around the Angle Park track in Grade 5 company, winning by over 10 lengths in 29.61.

At the end of the month Shima Breeze’s record stood at 28 starts with 13 wins and 11 placings and earnings around $61,000.
